How to Grow Your Following with a LinkedIn Newsletter
Have you published a TON of articles to your blog and wonder if you can republish all that content as articles in a LinkedIn Newsletter? 🤓
Are you wondering whether or not it's worth it to even publish articles on LinkedIn - or are normal LinkedIn posts better?
What's the newsletter feature on LinkedIn? If you have Creator Mode turned ON... you will be able to start publishing a newsletter ASAP!
In this episode of Mondays with Mindi, we talk about all things LinkedIn Newsletters, look at a few examples, and talk about five simple steps you can take now to start your own!
P.S. Do you have a LinkedIn Newsletter? Why or why not? Let's discuss in the comments! 👇🏽
How many of you are struggling to figure out how to use the LinkedIn Newsletter feature to effectively to build your personal brand and drive leads for your business?
Content is king when it comes to just about every online channel, but there are a number of nuances when it comes to LinkedIn and publishing good articles (or shall we call them Newsletter Editions?)
I know, I know… many of you have either never heard of the LinkedIn Newsletter feature or think LinkedIn Newsletters are completely dead. (I did, too!)
If you’ve ever thought that…
LinkedIn Newsletters are dead, nobody is using them
You’re going to hurt your SEO by republishing content to LinkedIn
I don’t have any content to put up on LinkedIn
I’ll just do a LinkedIn post instead because it’s easier
...or my favorite, I just don’t have the time
Then, let’s talk about the benefits of LinkedIn Newsletters and the investment that it takes to get yours up and running… it’s not as time consuming as you might think.
I put out a question to my newsletter a little while ago about what they wanted to learn about using LinkedIn to grow their presence.
Tim said, “I’d like to learn to use the LinkedIn Newsletter more effectively and get people outside of my immediate realm to read what I have to say.”
Good question! As any of you regular viewers already know, I LOVE to answer questions from listeners and readers.
Do LinkedIn Newsletters Actually Increase Engagement?
One of my clients whom I’ve been working with for more than eight years (whew, that’s like a lifetime in internet years) - wanted to start publishing a LinkedIn Newsletter from his profile after I convinced him that it was a great way to repurpose his 10+ years of blog content.
The only way to get this feature is to turn on LinkedIn Creator Mode, and you’ve got to leave it toggled on to keep your Newsletter privileges..
For many years, I was a bit of a LinkedIn Newsletter critic (before it was called a Newsletter and was referred to as Articles) because LinkedIn had not invested significantly in their publishing platform.
And I was hesitant to suggest that he start publishing a LinkedIn Newsletter because his other LinkedIn content was performing “okay” by my standards.
But, I suggested he republish one article per week from his blog to the LinkedIn Newsletter.
And, boom! After publishing his first six articles - he was averaging a massive 40.42% engagement rate on EVERY. SINGLE. ARTICLE.
That’s unheard of when it comes to typical LinkedIn posts. You’ll hope to get a 2-3% engagement rate which is REALLY high.
This kept up for several months, and I thought something must be off with the algorithm.
Even though his engagement rate did not continue to stay at that level indefinitely (well, more people are using LinkedIn Newsletters these days) he continues to post every week to his newsletter, hovers in the double digits engagement rate range, and gets great feedback from his readers.
This is a HUGE win over time when you’re playing the long game on LinkedIn because each edition builds trust with your readers.
The Power of Going Deeper with Your Content
If engaging with your followers on LinkedIn is a high priority, don’t underestimate LinkedIn Newsletters.
My LinkedIn Newsletter Edition from 2017 called “Getting Started with LinkedIn Hashtags” is still going strong and continues to drive prospects my way! I’ve started and continued conversations with those who’ve come across my article (and were outside my immediate LinkedIn network) because they found this article (that I honestly totally forget I wrote all that time ago!) years after it was published.
LinkedIn Newsletters (when done well) have staying power.
And, they don’t take that long to publish! There really is no excuse NOT to use them if you already have a stash of long-form content that you could republish here on LinkedIn.
Stop prioritizing and going for that short-term buzz you get from a popular LinkedIn post that took you 2 minutes to write…
Start thinking about the long-term value of your brand and how your best content to continue to perform long after you’ve moved onto other topics.
5 Steps to Publish Your LinkedIn Newsletter
Before we jump into the actual steps to publish your LinkedIn Newsletter, let’s take a look at a few good examples and what I like about them.
Here’s how to start publishing to LinkedIn to build a following in five simple steps.
Look through all of the content you’ve already written. Do you have blogs, articles, guest posts, thoughtful emails, tutorials, or book excerpts you could use?
Build LinkedIn Newsletter publishing into your weekly content marketing process. If weekly is too ambitious, start with once monthly.
Republish the article to your LinkedIn Newsletter on the same day each week (or month).
You’ll automatically be sharing a post to it on LinkedIn when you publish, but you can also drive targeted traffic to the post from your email newsletter, other social channels, or by DM’ing a few friendlies on LinkedIn to get the conversation started.
Start being consistent with your posting. That is KEY to continued success.
It’s not a short-term strategy, but what the Newsletter feature does give you is the ability to build a MASSIVE following on LinkedIn by having a public Newsletter that people can subscribe to while sharing your already-created content in a new place!
