Here’s the thing with eyeballs - they’re not always the “right” eyeballs. I’ve had conversations with a number of people who think that if they just drive enough traffic to their LinkedIn profile, they are going to start getting more connections which leads to more conversations which leads to more business opportunities.
On LinkedIn, it’s not just about TRAFFIC, but about getting the right type of traffic based on your goals.
And, it all starts with your LinkedIn profile. Too many people make the mistake of driving traffic to a subpar profile which results in:
Lots of profile views that don’t actually convert to connections
Confusing your profile viewers because they cannot figure out exactly what you do
Misrepresentation of what you actually do because you’ve since made a business pivot and have not yet updated your profile to match
You look like everyone else - you don’t hook them
It’s a bit of a hodgepodge and looks like it was slapped together
Sound familiar? It’s happened to me, too.
Your LinkedIn Positioning Matters
A major mistake I see is people believing that their profile doesn’t matter - as long as they get enough traffic.
It’s kind of like putting the cart before the horse (an American expression that means you’re doing things in the wrong order.)
In other words, you don’t want more traffic to your LinkedIn profile UNLESS it’s optimized for that traffic.
For example, I recently made the shift from a primary focus on helping one-to-one consulting clients and now am focused more on education, digital programs, and training people how to use LinkedIn for their business, brand and career.
My headline was still the same, and I wondered why I was getting all these people asking me to do a discovery call to work with them as a consultant.
I then realized that it had been some months since my own profile headline was updated. I made some subtle changes to that headline, and the conversations in my DMs began to shift.
People in my cold audience (those who didn’t already know me) then began saying things like “Yeah, I know you have all these LinkedIn courses and programs… can you help me, when’s the next program available?”
That positioning change made all the difference in my conversations and the types of people I am serving and the best way to work with me now.
It’s not one-to-one consulting so much as it is working with me inside a pretty kickass course or LinkedIn Bootcamp with support from me.
So, can you see how a change to your headline can make that difference? It’s your first impression.
Fix Up Your Profile BEFORE Sending Traffic
Focus on your LinkedIn profile before you do anything else on LinkedIn.
Don’t start pitching, messaging, connecting, or commenting until you are crystal clear on your positioning of yourself on LinkedIn.
This applies to those of you with 9-5 jobs, side hustles, job seeking - it doesn’t what your profession or whether you’re a business owner - you still need to have this dialed in. It’s the ONE place in the professional world where people are searching for you, looking you up, and expecting to find out more about you.
When you get a profile view, someone is interested in you, your work, your perspective.
Give them what they want!
Help them to learn more about what you do, how you can help, your projects, and all that makes you unique.
Start with your profile. Don’t drive traffic there until you’re ready!
...and the bonus to all this optimization is that you will actually notice a spike in inbound traffic without ever posting or intentionally driving targeted traffic because LinkedIn’s search engine will work in your favor.
Who’s ready to optimize their profile to start getting more traffic - or eyeballs!

The one-and-only John Dalgarno raised his hand for us to use his profile as an example today, so we are going to optimize John’s profile LIVE on the show.
Hopefully, you’ll get some ideas from how we go about improving his profile, so you can apply it to your own profile.
